214 (Production, Publication, Distribution, Manufacture Statements) (NEW)
Proposal 2019/1 posited the creation of a new U/B 214 field for separate statements for
production, publication, distribution, and manufacture, corresponding to MARC 21 Bibliographic
field 264. Proposal 2019/2 took the route of altering the existing U/B 210 to accommodate the
greater detail called for in the IFLA LRM. Changes to the proposed U/B 214 include:
*Move the second paragraph of the U/B 214 definition (“Information in field 214 ...”)
down to the Notes on Field Contents section.
*Indicators cannot be optional. Delete the two sentences about Indicator 1 being optional
and Indicator 2 being mandatory.
*Indicator 1: Change the definition of value “blank” to “Not applicable/No information
provided/Earliest available publisher.”
*Indicator 2: Strike the phrase “The field is used to carry a” from the definition of values
0, 1, 2, 3 , and 4. Redefine value “blank” as “Not applicable.”
* The asterisked notes will be put under their respective indicator values.
* Ms. Manneheut (Action: Ms. Manneheut) will provide instructions for using U/B 214
for older monographic publications to add to the Notes on Field Contents.
*The section entitled “Alternative for Parallel Data” and the corresponding Example 9
Alternative were deleted.
*Subfield $d definition changed to “Date of publication, production, distribution,
manufacture, or copyright.”
*In the definition for U/B 210, add the statement “Fields 210 and 214 should not be used
in the same record.”
After discussing the two alternative proposals, 2019/1 for the new field U/B 214 was accepted
and 2019/2 for further work to expand field U/.B 210 was rejected.
